My number 1 tip for dogs that struggle to stay still for photos - FIND A BIG ROCK!
It is much easier to get a dog to stay on a rock, then to stay on a random spot on the ground and the added bonus is it makes it easier for you to be at their level without laying on the ground yourself because photos of the top of your dog's back are just not cool. We want to see your dog's face! So next time you're out hiking or at the park with your dog, find a rock and take photos of your dog!
Many dogs naturally like to get on top of things and some dogs are a little hesitant because they have house manners and think it isn't okay to jump on things. Either way, it's usually not hard to teach. The easiest thing to do is to lure your dog up with food and give lots of food and happy praise while on the rock. Your dog will be excited to jump on rocks for photos in no time. If you don't want to go through the whole training process, it's still pretty easy to get a short stay on a rock. Just remember to make sure your dog is happy and having fun. Photos should always be fun!
After Covid hit, the parks were too crowded and I haven't checked to see if they are still crowded or not. Instead of hitting any parks, I used the Randonautica app to find a random location for this portrait. It was almost dark and still super hot, which shows by my dog's tongue. This was the only image we got. It was just too hot for him to model any longer than this.
As you can see the rock not only helped him know where he needed to be, but also elevated him high enough to see a little bit of the city off in the distance behind him.
