2 quick tips to help you stay mindful during the holidays
Brrrr, how did it go from sweltering to brrrr, so quickly?
With the cold weather, I'm reminded of the approaching holidays and new year and failing resolutions. So I am starting my resolutions early so I can practice a bit before January. Of course, that includes sending a monthly newsletter. So here I am again, and I hope to pop into your inbox at the beginning of every month.
What's the theme this month? Mindfulness, specifically with your pets. As someone who shares my home with senior pets, I spend a lot of time wondering things like, is he sleeping more than normal? Didn't she just drink a few minutes ago - or was that someone else? Am I giving too many supplements? I also spend time wishing I had more time and feeling the anticipatory grief of knowing many things will most likely be 'lasts.'
To combat mentally living in the future fearing loss, I'm taking time to live in the moment with my seniors and sharing how I'm doing that, along with a reminder to pay attention to avoid wondering if something is really off or if maybe it's just something you never noticed before.
5 minutes of one-on-one time every day
We can't get more time with our pets, but we can treasure the time we have by setting aside 5 minutes a day to be in the moment with our pet(s). Even if that means adding it to the calendar until it becomes a habit. I'm committing to 5 minutes a day, and I hope you'll join me! Well, not me, but your pet. 5 minutes of one-on-one time with no phone, and no interruptions. You won't regret it.
Pay attention to the little things
As we enter the holiday season, it's easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day hustle (I feel the need to add 'and bustle' which makes me feel really old). With all the craziness, here's your special reminder to pay attention to your pets. Notice the details. Pets can hide their discomfort quite well, but, you know your pet better than anyone. If something is out of the ordinary, don't brush it off, pay attention.
Here are some extra tips to help you notice the subtle messages your pet is sharing with you.
